Do You Want Your Tax Dollars to Guarantee Risky Nuclear Investments? The
nuclear industry is seeking more than $50 billion in loan guarantees  for
the construction of new nuclear power plants. These loan guarantees would
put you – rather than investors – on the hook to pay back the loans should
the plants default. Write Congress now.

WARNING: This Label May Be Dangerous to Your Health. When Charles Riegel
underwent angioplasty, the catheter used in the procedure burst inside his
artery. Mr. Riegel developed a complete heart block and required an
emergency coronary bypass. He and his wife later sued the catheter’s
manufacturer, seeking compensation for his injuries. The company argues that
manufacturers of dangerous medical devices cannot be held liable for
injuries caused by their products.Find out how Public Citizen is protecting

Presidential Candidates Need to Kick the Lobbyist Habit
We hear plenty about criminal campaign contributors and
lobbyist-fundraisers. Former fugitive and big Democratic fundraiser Norman
Hsu is in the news, as is a Gallup poll indicating that most Americans think
presidential candidates should not take money from lobbyists. Get the latest

 Ask a Public Citizen Staffer
Staff on Your Behalf. Last month, Public Citizen’s energy guru Tyson Slocum
took questions from you. One came from Bill in New Mexico, who asked: Why
doesn’t the U.S. have high-speed trains?  Couldn’t this form of
transportation be more efficient then airline travel? Tyson responded: Dear
Bill, You’re absolutely right that we need high-speed rail in this country.
But heavy lobbying by the oil and gas industry – including big campaign
contributions from Big Oil to your local elected officials – is keeping
America addicted to oil. I have outlined a plan (.pdf) to help finance new
investments in mass transit – including high-speed rail – by raising taxes
on record oil company profits. Please contact your elected officials and
demand that they hold Big Oil accountable by ending all subsidies to oil
companies and instead use the money to invest in high-speed rail.

 Press Room
Decisions this important should not be made in haste, and definitely not in
the dark of night:
The Bush administration continues to ignore the safety of the American
public with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) trucks pilot
program that it announced – late at night last week – would begin
immediately. Learn more in the Press Room and write Congress.
UNPROTECTED: Kids and passengers in the back seat of cars and cars hit by
SUVs : The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has taken
an important first step with a recently released new side-impact standard —
and it should be congratulated. HOWEVER, its work is far from done. Get
details in the Press Room.
