Tomorrow, September 18, the House will consider H.R. 1852, the
Expanding American Homeownership Act of 2007. This bill includes a
provision that reserves some of the savings created by FHA’s expansion
of the home equity conversion mortgage program (HECM) for the National
Affordable Housing Trust Fund.  A number of amendments have been filed
to strike this provision. We also expect an amendment that has an
identification requirement to be offered.
Urge your Representative to vote against the following amendments to
H.R. 1852:
o Oppose separate amendments offered by Representatives Judy Biggert
(R-IL) and Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) that would strike the provision
transferring FHA savings into a Trust Fund (click here for reasons why
a housing trust fund is needed).
o Oppose an amendment by Representative Biggert (R-IL) that would
re-write the bill without the funding reserve for the Trust Fund.
o Oppose an amendment by Representative Tom Price (R-GA) that would
require households receiving money from the Trust Fund to present
verification of legal residency by a secure identification document
(click here for reasons to oppose this amendment).
Please use this toll free number, 877-210-5351, for the congressional
switchboard and asked to be connected to the housing staffer for your
Representative’s office. Urge him or her to vote against all of the
amendments that threaten one of the funding sources for the National
Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
