My Transition out of WITNESS
I am writing to let you know that after almost ten wonderful years serving as the Executive Director of WITNESS, I have decided that it’s time for a change. I have been hard at work with WITNESS board and staff planning for a transition in leadership.

It was a heart wrenching decision for me because I love my job, our mission, and the WITNESS team very much. The past decade literally flew by because of all the remarkable challenges and opportunities that we have met together. It has been an honor and privilege to grow and evolve with WITNESS every step of the way.

But this is an opportune moment for my departure … both for me personally and for WITNESS. I feel deeply called to try and make a difference on the impending collapse of the climate. I have accepted an offer to become the Campaign Director for a new initiative called 1Sky. While I am excited about my next chapter and the challenges that lay ahead, I must honestly say that I envy my successor!

As we celebrate our 15th year, I have absolute confidence that the team we have built at WITNESS is ready for the next stage in our evolution as an organization, and indeed the next level of impact with our worldwide Hub which will premiere at our gala benefit on November 7th, co-hosted by Peter Gabriel and Maggie Gyllenhaal with performances by Jackson Browne and The Roots.

We have a remarkable, multi-national team of 30 people on staff, and an equally talented, dedicated and passionate group of people as members of our Board of Directors and Advisory Committee.

WITNESS has established a Search and Transition Team, comprised of board and staff, who are engaging a search firm to carry out a full-fledged international search to identify our next Executive Director. In the interim, our truly fantastic Deputy Director Jenni Wolfson will serve as the Acting Executive Director beginning November 12th.

This is not a goodbye, because WITNESS is and always will be a central part of who I am.

With the deepest gratitude for your support and collaboration in the past and in the years to come,

Gillian Caldwell
Executive Director

Stand with Burma’s Brave Citizens – Demand UN Security Council Action
Dear james m,

Yesterday, people all around the world joined to commemorate September 18th – the anniversary of the 1988 military takeover in Burma – and to call for change in Burma.

For nearly 20 years, the people of Burma have lived with a repressive military regime where corruption is rife and human rights abuses are widespread. For example, in Eastern Burma, the junta’s campaign of repression has emptied more than 3000 villages and over 500,000 people have been displaced from their homes. The democratically elected leader, Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, has spent most of the last 18 years under house arrest.

However, during the past month courageous monks, activists and ordinary citizens have raised their voices for change in the largest peaceful protests in the country in a decade.

Stand with Burma’s brave citizens and Act Now to ensure their freedom and rights, and stability for the region:

*Ask the UN Security General to support UN Security Council action now;

*Watch WITNESS Partner Burma Issues’ “Shoot on Sight” video showing the shattered lives of villagers fleeing the military attacks, and learn more at the WITNESS website;

*Watch and share “Shoot on Sight” on YouTube.

Sincerely,

Sam Gregory
WITNESS Program Director
