Protect Your Vote and the Vote of Every American

Protect Your Vote and the Vote of Every American
Dear Friends,
Tuesday, November 4th is fast approaching and we are urging every eligible American to get out and vote in this historic election.  Your vote is your voice and it’s essential to know your rights and speak out. Urge your family, friends and colleagues to know their voting rights and to cast their ballots.
We need your help to ensure that this election is fair, that every American, who is registered to vote, is able to cast his or her ballot, and that all votes will be counted.
Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA) is proud to continue our partnership with Election Protection (EP), a crucial, nonpartisan program which helps strengthen American democracy. EP works to safeguard voters’ rights, particularly for African Americans, Latinos, and other historically disenfranchised communities. EP encourages voter participation, advises voters of their legal rights, provides volunteer poll monitors, and offers free and immediate assistance to voters who encounter problems registering or voting. A team of thousands of legal experts and trained volunteers are standing by now through Election Day to offer free assistance.
If you have questions, problems, or concerns about voting:
Visit the Election Protection website: www.866ourvote.org
Call Election Protection toll-free: 1-866-OUR-VOTE
Call Election Protection toll-free in Spanish: 1-888-Ve-Y-Vota
Memorize those numbers, enter them into your phone, or write them down and take them with you to the polls on Election Day!
After the 2000 election debacle, where thousands of African Americans were turned away from the polls in Florida and the votes of tens of thousands of Americans of all colors were not counted, ANSA decided to take action. As an organization founded to help gain the vote for all South Africans, we could not stand idly by as that precious right was denied to our fellow Americans.
ANSA became an active member of the Election Protection coalition, a partnership of over 100 civil and voting rights organizations across the country, founded by People for the American Way Foundation and led in 2008 by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
Starting in 2002, ANSA began producing radio public service announcements (PSAs), which have featured Angela Bassett, Danny Glover, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Rock, Blair Underwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Vanessa Williams, and Alfre Woodard.  These spots have aired throughout the country, with an emphasis on reaching African American and Latino voters in crucial swing states where the threat of disenfranchisement is greatest. The PSAs provide vital voting information to millions of Americans and let them know that they can contact Election Protection for free, expert advice if they encounter problems voting. In fact, ANSA received People for the American Way Foundation’s prestigious 2005 Democracy Award for our unique and cost-effective efforts with EP.

Our spots are airing across America now through Election Day.  Listen to Samuel L. Jackson, Blair Underwood and Angela Bassett.
