Democracy & the Arts:
Curricula Updated
The latest module in our curricula was written by Merna Hecht for The Poet Populist Program.
It comes in two parts. The first lesson draws from history and civics and should open up a lively discussion of democracy and populism. The second focuses on how poetry can spark populist sentiments and provide an innovative frame through which people give artistic expression to what they want and need for a better life.
Both lessons call on diverse American voices, historical and poetic, to engage students in conversations that allow them to explore their own concerns related to the November election.
Go to the Democracy & the Arts module.
The Poet Populist Program supports creative public thinking, articulate leadership, and the practice of democracy. It proposes that artists can be part of the civic discourse, and that the civic discourse can be artistically inclined. It also gives dozens of arts organizations a chance to reach out to new audiences city-wide. Learn more about the work of The Poet Populist.
Books that Shed Light on Democracy
The True Patriot, by Seattlites Eric Liu and Nick Hanauer, challenges progressives to retake patriotism.
Written in the pamphleteering style of Thomas Paine, it presents a manifesto, ten-principal plan, and moral code that re-frames the concept of patriotism and return politics to what it once was: a civic virtue and responsibility that fueled the country’s founders.
