The end of conventional wisdom: a new opportunity for communities and the environment
Dear James M,
Conventional wisdom used to be that a different skin color, or an unusual last name, would make a presidential candidate unelectable.
Well, that conventional wisdom expired on November 4th.
And with it, so has some other conventional wisdom of the past eight years:
We must drill our way to energy independence
We can’t limit our production of dirty energy
Conservation is a private virtue
The federal government is the enemy of communities and the environment
In fact, the new wisdom – seen in President-elect Obama’s energy and environmental policy — sounds a lot more like common sense.
As President-elect Obama said in his first post-election press conference, change will not be quick or easy. The influence of the fossil fuel and extractive industries has not just vanished. There’s no guarantee that the new administration will be peopled entirely with people who support our goals. The Bureau of Land Management isn’t going to do an about-face overnight.
But with one election, the path towards cleaner energy and better protection for communities and the environment just became a whole lot smoother.
So, with your help, we will work to make great strides in —
advancing the goals of the No Dirty Energy campaign to eliminate our reliance on energy sources that harm communities and the global climate
working with drilling and mining companies towards independently certified standards that permit responsible mining
updating laws and regulations to better protect communities and the environment from the modern fossil fuel and extractive industries.
Working together, all things are possible.
Looking forward to the next year…
