The True Meaning of Mothers Day:
Dear Friend of WAND,

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, we thought we’d share the story of the true meaning of this holiday. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe, a suffragette and abolitionist, issued one of the first calls for a celebration of mothers. Julia wrote a proclamation titled “Mother’s Day for Peace” as a pacifist reaction to the Civil War. She called on mothers to have a voice in their societies and to use that voice to oppose war and speak for peace.

In 1914, Anna Jarvis convinced the U.S. Congress to pass a joint resolution establishing an official Mother’s Day. Anna’s campaign for Mother’s Day drifted away from emphasizing women’s roles as peacemakers as Julia Ward Howe had done, and focused instead on women’s role in the family.

Here at WAND, we still like to recognize Julia Ward Howe’s mission to encourage women to promote peace. In honor of Mother’s Day, we are asking people to write to their local papers and urge their members of Congress to pass a budget that is more in line with their values—a budget that builds our economy prosperity, while still keeping us secure. Rather than wasting billions on weapons that don’t work and that we don’t need, we need a budget that invests in jobs, education, and infrastructure.

In honor of the true meaning of Mother’s Day, we have attached two sample letters to the editor that you can personalize and submit to your local papers. With state budgets facing record shortfalls, now is the time to call for a shift in budget priorities in Washington!

We hope you will honor your mother or your own children and grandchildren by advocating for a responsible and sensible budget. We recommend that you submit your letter to the editor as soon as possible so that your letter can be published for Mother’s Day! Please contact me at 202-544-5055 ext. 2602 or eramsey@wand.org for any assistance with drafting or submitting your Mother’s Day letters to the editor.  Thank you,

Elaina Ramsey

You can support mothers like Brigitte by making a gift to CVT in honor of Mother’s Day through TisBest Charity Gift Card. TisBest Charity Gift Cards work like other gift cards, with one meaningful exception: the recipient directs the funds to one or more of the charities on the TisBest website. (And CVT is on the list!)  It’s quick and easy: you pick the amount of the donation (your purchase is 100% tax deductible), upload your own picture and choose the delivery method. Your gift recipient then directs the card balance to the charities of their choice.  And, for each charity gift card you purchase through this link, TisBest will donate $2 to CVT. The best part is that your recipient will see a brief message about CVT that encourages them to spend part of their gift card to support us.
