Day Laborers: Ready & Reliable: Ready and Reliable. Day Laborers are Here to Help. During this holiday season when good will abounds, the best gift one can give a day laborer is a dignified day of work.
These days, our families aren’t expecting luxurious holidays, simply hoping for basic employment to provide for every day needs, a roof over one’s head, and to put food on the table. Especially in the winter, when work is more scarce and need is even higher.
More often than not the day laborer community has become the focus of attack with our contributions to our cities’ well being going unrecognized. In the face of that marginalization and stigma, contracting workers is itself an act of immeasurable solidarity.
Friends, please consider hiring a day laborer this month. To help facilitate this process, we’re launching a new website
There, you can find the day laborer worker centers closest to you.
I think you’ll find it’s the help you need, when you need it, at the price you can afford.
PS Please go that extra mile and forward this video on to all your friends and family. http://bit.ly/hireadaylaborer

CAIR Action Alert:
Don’t Let Lowe’s Off the Hook for Appeasing Anti-Muslim Bigotry Take a letter to your local Lowe’s store manager, post a photo online
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/21/2011) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today urged all people of conscience to continue to hold Lowe’s corporate headquarters accountable for its decision to appease anti-Muslim bigotry by delivering a letter of protest to a store manager and posting a photo of that action online. Nearly 250,000 people have already expressed their disappointment in Lowe’s.
A sample letter to Lowe’s managers provided by CAIR states in part: “Lowe’s should agree to undertake reasonable actions to show the broader American public that it’s business model includes no room for bigotry. Until that time, we have no interest in your products.”
The home improvement chain recently pulled its advertising from TLC’s new reality series “All-American Muslim” because of an anti-Muslim campaign initiated by fringe right-wing groups like the Florida Family Association (FFA) and Internet hate sites such as “Bare Naked Islam” — which recently featured a number of threats of violence targeting U.S. and European mosques. The hate groups objected to the show’s non-stereotypical portrayals of American Muslims.

Lowe’s officials have ignored requests to meet with community organizations.
A number of spontaneous protests have take place outside Lowe’s stores nationwide and the retailer was forced to delete thousands of anti-Muslim comments from its Facebook page.

“Lowe’s seems to be betting that the upcoming holidays will distract people from the corporation’s decision to appease anti-Muslim bigots,” said CAIR National Legislative Director Corey Saylor. “If everyone takes a few simple steps we can remind Lowe’s that caving in to bigotry is a bad business model.”
Saylor noted that numerous politicians, celebrities and journalists have already spoken out against the decision to pull the ads. This week a group of Baptist and Jewish leaders delivered a petition with 200,000 signatures to Lowe’s headquarters. A separate petition has over 40,000 signatures and is growing.
CAIR is working in coordination with the National Boycott Lowe’s Network and the Boycott Bigotry campaign.
ACTION REQUESTED (As always, be polite but persistent. Forward this alert to your friends and family and ask them to take similar actions.)
1) Deliver a letter to Lowe’s and take a picture. (For Muslims this is a simple action to take right before or after Jummah prayers.) • Find a Lowe’s outlet near you.
• Print a letter and have some friends and family join you in signing it. To print out the letter, go here.
• Make a sign that says “Boycott Bigotry.”
• Go to your local Lowe’s.
• Take a picture outside with your sign and the Lowe’s logo.
•Deliver the letter to the store manager and ask him or her to send it to the regional manager.
•Later, post your photo on Boycott Bigotry, your Facebook and on Twitter (Sample: @Lowes caves to bigots over “All-American Muslim” so I will take my money elsewhere #boycottbigotry)
2) Friend both “Boycott Bigotry” and the “National Lowe’s Boycott Network” on Facebook. These networks will keep you looped in and offer you additional ways to reject bigotry.

Sheriff Joe Shut Down: Last week, the Justice Department released a blistering report confirming what we already know: Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio harasses, intimidates and terrorizes Latinos and immigrants, and he’s been doing it for years.
And because of these findings, the federal government is FINALLY removing Arpaio’s authority to enforce immigration law.
Make no mistake about it, this victory would not have happened without you. Advocates from around the country signed petitions demanding that the Department of Justice investigate Arpaio and they answered the call. We demanded that DHS and Secretary Janet Napolitano stop allowing Arpaio to funnel immigrants into deportation proceedings and finally, after three years, they’ve responded.
We’ve had some major victories this year, but this is definitely one of the biggest. It’s days like these that remind us what working together can do.
Sheriff Arpaio has until January to decide whether he will reform his policies or face a lawsuit, and he’s already stated that he won’t go down without a fight.
We’ll keep you updated, but for now we just wanted to thank you for helping make a difference.
P.S. Of course, Arizona isn’t the only place where the Constitutional rights of Latinos and immigrants are being violated. Right now we have an ongoing crisis in Alabama caused by HB 56, their extremist new anti-immigrant law. We’re already seeing politicians who voted for the law are now beginning to back pedal. Now is our chance to make a difference in Alabama. Please join the fight.
Cesar’s Birthday is Today: We emailed you on Monday asking for your support and you responded. You either signed Cesar’s petition or you made a call on his behalf, whatever you did it worked. Today is Cesar’s birthday and we are happy to report that he’ll be spending it at home, with his family! On Monday night Cesar was released from the Michigan detention center he was being held at. This case was made possible thanks to your work, that of 1Michigan and the Indiana Dream initiative. Great Job! Cesar is very thankful for everything you did, he is hoping the Obama administration will take his release one step further and finally grant his deferred action. We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop about his case just in case he needs a bit more help. If you like the work we do and want to stay better connected please be sure to Like us on facebook. We have an active community there and want to make sure your voice is present. Act.

Tell Gov. Brown: We’re serious about banning methyl iodide.: Let’s keep the pressure on.
Together we have held the line on methyl iodide in California. Getting it banned there will be a first step to getting this chemical out of U.S. agriculture, period.
We’ve pitched a long battle here in California to keep the cancer-causing pesticide methyl iodide out of strawberry fields because getting it banned here will make a national ban all the more likely. Some 90% of the nation’s strawberries are grown here. So without a CA market, methyl iodide just isn’t viable.
Back in 2010, growers argued that without methyl iodide, California’s billion-dollar agriculture industry would hemorrhage jobs and profits. Guess what? The cancer-causing pesticide has been approved for use in California’s strawberry fields for a year now. But farmers aren’t using it. Records show only six applications in the entire state, all on very small farms – by now there should have been hundreds.
Why only six? Because consumers like you have helped the UFW and our partners keep up the pressure. By writing e-mails, calling decision makers, passing local resolutions and more, you have helped us hold the line to stop growers using methyl iodide.
According to a Dec 14 article in the Huffington Post, “some growers say methyl iodide is too politically risky to use. ‘The people who oppose this particular chemical are really loud and effective,’ said Liz Elwood Ponce, co-owner of Lassen Canyon Nursery in Redding. ‘If no one said anything, I think the chemical would be used more widely. ‘”
And according to our partner Pesticide Action Network, PR people at methyl iodide’s manufacturer, Arysta, have told reporters that they “don’t call it methyl iodide anymore because the public thinks methyl iodide means poison.”
Help us keep up the pressure. Last April, Brown said he’d “take a fresh look” at the methyl iodide decision. Since this time, memos have gone public showing that the decision to allow the use of this toxin was based on political calculations, not science.
We’re told that the new head of the state’s Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) will be appointed around the new year. This person will have the power to reverse the prior administration’s decision and ban this toxin once and for all.
Please send an e-mail today and tell Governor Brown that whomever he appoints to head DPR should take swift action to reverse this bad decision and protect farm workers and local residents who live in agricultural areas. Keeping this carcinogenic chemical out of California must be a priority for the new year.
After you take action please share this campaign with your friends and family. You can send them an e-mail, post this campaign on your Facebook and/or Twitter page by clicking here or going to
http://action.ufw.org/page/share/mei1211 Will You Make a Holiday Gift to Help Farm Workers?
The holiday season is when we share special memories and look forward to creating new ones in the coming year. We’ve accomplished a lot, but there is still more to do.
Please help us bring justice to the fields by making a donation to help farm workers. Or even make a New Year’s resolution that lasts all year long by joining our monthly pledge program. No amount is too much or too little. Even a few dollars will help us get stronger and take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
Thank you again for your generosity. From our family to yours, Happy Holidays!

Live Green. Give Green.: December: The month of the charitable tax write-off.
Please don’t forget about the Green Party when making your end-of-year donations. But you can’t get a charitable write-off on your taxes with us. We’re a political party.
We’re not like the other non-profits you give to. We can’t receive grant money or foundation funding. And we’re not like any other political party, because the Green Party and its candidates reject corporate money.
The Green Party is doing something unique for democracy in the United States. We’re a political party that insists that values, your values, guide public policy. And those values mean we’re fully funded by individuals like you.
Our “foundation funding” comes from sustaining donors, people who give every month. James M, if you and the tens of thousands of other people reading this email were to commit to give $10/Month, then the Green Party of the United States would be a multi-million dollar organization overnight. And if everyone gave $25/Month… well, you get the idea. It’s a fun vision for this country’s political future.
Live Green. Give Green. It’s more than a cute phrase. It’s the very essence of our political movement. Give today.
David Sacks Fundraiser, Green Party of the United States

BREAKING NEWS: Arpaio smack down by DoJ AND DHS / NOTICIA: Golpe Contudente a Arpaio por DoJ y DHS: lealo en espanol abajo de la linea
Great news! Today, the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security came down hard on Sheriff Arpaio in no uncertain terms, calling him out for his racist and unconstitutional abuses of the Latino community. Here is an excerpt from the DoJ report: ‘Based on our extensive investigation, we find reasonable cause to believe that MCSO engages in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional policing. Specifically, we find that MCSO, through the actions of its deputies, supervisory staff, and command staff, engages in racial profiling of Latinos; unlawfully stops, detains, and arrests Latinos; and unlawfully retaliates against individuals who complain about or criticize MCSO’s policies or practices, all in violation of Section 14141. MCSO’s discriminatory police conduct additionally violates Title VI and its implementing regulations.’ And, from the DHS press conference, with Secretary Janet Napolitano: “The Department of Homeland Security is troubled by the Department of Justice’s findings of discriminatory policing practices within the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office,” Napolitano said in a statement. “Discrimination undermines law enforcement and erodes the public trust. DHS will not be a party to such practices. Accordingly, and effective immediately, DHS is terminating MCSO’s 287(g) jail model agreement and is restricting the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office access to the Secure Communities program.” This is amazing news for our county and a tremendous victory for all of you who have been a part of this campaign! Please take a minute to find out more about these important developments here,
and then celebrate our collective success. Together, we CAN win true change for our community! Adelante, Monica Sandschafer, LUCHA http://www.luchaaz.org/ ______________________________________________________________________________
¡Buenas noticias!
Adelante, Monica Sandschafer, LUCHA http://www.luchaaz.org/

Please, I’m sure we would all agree, we are a nation of immigrants. Over 10 million immigrants currently live in our country illegally. Most were attracted by low-wage jobs unwanted by US citizens in agriculture and service industries. With few exceptions they live responsibly, raising families and paying taxes just as legal residents do. Although they are accused of draining American health and education resources, comprehensive studies show that undocumented aliens contribute as much as they take from the national economy. Still, they are unable to live normal lives and make their full contribution to society. This while costly attempts to stop illegal immigration are failing, and it is time to consider alternatives. For the good of our nation and in fairness to immigrants, Washington must set clear guidelines, quotas and policies regarding people from other countries who live and work in the United States, and who want to become US citizens. I urge the White House and Congress to support comprehensive immigration reform as proposed in H.R. 4321, with changes, no repatriation to country of origin, no large fines, etc.- or, at least, the Dream Act, now. Thanx. Goodbye.
Thanx for all you do and Happy Holidays!
