Protect Future Elections Now
Dear James M,
Tell your Representative to protect your vote in the next election.
There is a Florida representative sitting in Congress right now whose
election is still being questioned in the courts because electronic
paperless voting machine glitches may have actually put the wrong person in
office.1 There have been reports for years of those machines stalling
elections, flipping votes from one candidate to another, or just outright
losing votes.2

Now, with a crucial national election looming, Congress has still not fixed
our broken voting machines. They might finally take the first step this
week, if we speak up.
our broken voting machines. They might finally take the first step this
week, if we speak up.
The "Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2007" offered by
Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) would make a start on fixing some of the worst
problems. It would require that every voter get to see a real paper record
of their vote, and ensure in case of any recount that the voter-verified
paper record decides the outcome. The bill also outlaws the huge security
risk of connecting voting machines to wireless internet connections.

It’s taken years of legislative wrangling and compromise to get these
changes to a vote. Ask your Representative to pass the Holt Bill to repair
our elections.

We know that the Holt Bill is only a first step, and that some voting
activists say it doesn’t go far enough. We respect that opinion. We’ve
studied the bill, talked to voting activists and followed this issue for
three years, and this is a concrete step toward better elections. Since
TrueMajorityACTION members first took on the issue of unreliable paperless
voting machines we’ve seen two national elections go by, both with reports
of questionable results. Let’s do something now, before we see a third.
